Feature Projects

Peel-yalgorup Ramsar site

We have been involved in numerous projects at the Peel-Yalgorup Ramsar site for over a decade. This includes monitoring waterbird breeding colonies, tracking changes in the migratory shore bird population, and working with the local council and community to raise awareness and educate members of the public about local wildlife conservation.

Australian plague locust management progam

As part of our work to reduce the risk of bird strikes at Perth Airport, OTS has developed an industry leading management program to manage locusts and grasshoppers (a known attractant of several bird species that pose a high strike risk for aircraft). This program has been developed over the past few years and to date has resulted in a significant reduction in bird strikes. The program is based on scientifically rigourous data collection and industry relevant best practice management techniques.

Herdsman Lake Bird Banding Project

OTS has been running a long term banding project/training school since 2003. Since the program began, over 30,000 birds have been banded. The group has successfully trained eight A-class bird banders so far.

Rottnest Island Banding Project

OTS has recently started a colour banding project looking into the movements of Silver Gulls in the Perth metro area. The project mirrors a similar ongoing project in Adelaide SA, where Silver Gulls have been fitted with blue and white colour bands.

Waterbirds and Seabirds of the South-west banding project

OTS operates a banding project looking into the movements, demography, ecology, behaviour, morphology, ecophysiology, genetics, return rates and techniques used to catch waterbirds and seabirds of south-western Australia.
